Sink or Float

  Experiment Question:
  • How does the density of an object affect if the object will float or sink?

Materials:

  • 100 ml graduated cylinder

  • 20 ml of water (from the sink)

  • 10 ml of vegetable oil

  • 10 ml of Syrup

  • Plastic cube

  • Dice

  • Penny

  • Scale

Procedure:

  1. Hypothesis: Draw what it would like if you added, a plastic cube, dice, vegetable oil, syrup, water, and a penny all into a 100 ml graduated cylinder.  Draw this below the data table.

     

  2. Find the mass of all the objects and write it down in the data table

  3. Find the volume of all the objects and write it down in the data table

  4. Calculate the density of all the objects/liquids. Show ALL calculations in your science notebook. Record the answers in the data table.

  5. Add 10 ml of vegetable oil into the 100 ml graduated cylinder.

  6. Carefully Drop the penny into the 100 ml graduated cylinder

  7. Carefully drop the dice into the 100 ml graduated cylinder.

  8. Add 10 ml of syrup into the 100 ml graduated cylinder.

  9. Add 20 ml of water from the sink into the 100 ml graduated cylinder
  10. Carefully Drop the plastic cube into the 100 ml graduated cylinder.

  11. Draw what the graduated cylinder looks like below.

Data Analysis:

1.  Look at your data table.  Does the objects that have the most mass sink to the bottom?Give evidence (numbers).

2. Why did the 3 liquids separate like the way they did? (Hint: Use the word Density in your explanation)

3.  In which liquid(s) did the dice sink through?  Now, look at the data table and COMPARE the density of the dice to the liquid(s) it sank through?  What do you notice?

4. In which liquid(s) did the dice float on top of?  COMPARE the density of the dice to the liquid(s) it floated on top of?  What do you notice?

5.  In which liquid(s) did the plastic cube sink through?  Now, look at the data table and COMPARE the density of the plastic cube to the liquid(s) it sank through?  What do you notice?

6. In which liquid(s) did the plastic cube float on top of?  COMPARE the density of the plastic cube to the liquid(s) it floated on top of?  What do you notice?

  In this lab, we observed some objects and liquid and tested them to see whether they will float or sink.  The materials we used were: a plastic cube, water, syrup, dice, penny, and vegetable oil.  First, we made a drawing of what it might look like, this was our hypothesis.  Then we tested the materials and measured their mass, volume, and density.  We finished by comparing our first drawing to the one that was done after the experiment. The density of one object affects whether it will float or  sink because if the density is less then it will float, it is more it will sink.  

  Today we put syrup, vegi oil,

in this experiment we tested if certain objects would either sink or float based on their density compared to the density of the liquid. basically if the density of the object is less than the density of the liquid then the object will float.
